Caring is BACK in style
2025 has been like a breath of fresh air. Have you felt it as well?
No longer are we going to subject ourselves to the external demands others place on us when it comes to living towards our individual potential.
I’ve dubbed it the year of ‘relentless creativity’ and encouraged you to ‘hoist the black flag’ but perhaps the ‘year of caring’ is most appropriate.
Yesterday I wrote about the importance of caring in forming a lasting foundation for consistency in fitness (read it HERE). But not just in the way we move our bodies, most specifically in the meaning we attach to the moving our bodies.
Today I want to double down on the point and provide more fitness specific inspiration and encouragement to anyone reading this who needs more reassurance that this is the right path to travel down.
Why you need to LOVE your fitness
There’s a strange dynamic in the fitness world, this expectation that the people who exercise consistency love every single second of it. This creates a mismatch in the minds of people who aren’t exercising at all but want to get into the habit. When they come up against resistance, and that image of the ‘I love exercise all the time’ stereotype comes into focus, the initial inclination is to quit because it’s not working ‘for me.’
It’s true that the consistent exerciser loves fitness, but certainly NOT in the way most project and expect.
stated it perfectly a few weeks back. It’s not every single session that you enjoy and love, it’s the entire process. To take it further, if exercise is a ‘hobby’ then the activity that forms the core of the hobby is one you have deep interest in. And let’s just get right to it, is it even possible to have a hobby without caring about how you do it and what the end results look like?
Impossible. The secret to staying with exercise over the long haul in anchoring the habit in an activity you enjoy, that is fun, and that you love doing for it’s own sake.
Then, and ONLY, then will you find that elusive consistency. Discipline alone won’t get it done.
Fun is a necessary and sufficient condition.
Get Romantic about FUN
Now here’s your challenge. Get CREATIVE with exercise.
I promise you, there are millions of ways to move your body to strengthen your muscles, increase cardio vascular health, find community and camaraderie, and provide a long runway to progress in skill and performance.
But there might only be one or two exercises that speak to your heart RIGHT NOW at this very moment. Those activities are the ones you need to anchor your exercise directly into.
There are a few GIF’s that consistently make the rounds on social media I want to highlight. They are creative ways to move your body that make look strange and certainly unorthodox when it comes the world of ‘adult fitness.’ However, it’s clear these are FUN and the people engaging in them are enjoying the work.
We have ‘wall ball’ guy just throwing and catching without a care in the world and also ‘ninja guy’ training with a katana like he’s ready to engage in battle.
I provide these examples as inspiration to really GET CREATIVE with your fitness.
Enjoyment, purpose, imagination, determination, disipline, and excellence all come from engaging in an activity that interests you. That’s how you bring CARE directly into your fitness routines.
By engaging the heart, aiming with the spirit, and forging your own path in fitness, you will find the missing ingredients that have prevented you from finding elusive consistency.
Don’t worry if ‘no one else is doing it’ and forget about ‘what will others think.’
The time is NOW to go all in on creativity, caring, and doing the work to make it all real in your life!
