How do athletics teach you to live a virtuous life?
In the following progression 👇
1. Athletics force you into discomfort
- There's the sacrifices that go along with prioritizing training
- There's the physical pain of performing hard athletic movements
-There's the potential for failure
Coming into contact with discomfort gives you the ability to overcome adversity
When you overcome the struggle you gain virtues
Think: hard work / dedication / bravery / sacrifice
2. Virtues are related to character
-When you gain virtue they become incorporated into your character over time
-Show bravery once in sport and all of a sudden you act braver outside of sport
If you make athletics a habit you give yourself more opportunities to practice virtue and thus you become that person the more and more you engage in struggle
But the motivation matters leading us to the final point
3. Willingly accepting struggle aims you at your true potential
-We all know we have more to give and more to become
-But there are tremendous obstacles in the way
-Those who VOLUNTARILY accept struggle walk the narrow road to their destiny
There can be no transcendence without suffering
When you choose to take on that suffering you become righteous in your journey
The internal motivation driving you allows you to hurdle over the obstacles to grab virtue on your way to glory
To summarize
1. Athletics force you into discomfort
2. Virtues are related to character
3. Willingly accepting struggle aims you at your true potential
