The way you think becomes WHO YOU ARE
Too many people live a life they think is a dream but turns out to be a prison
The key is knowing what becomes a trap and where to find the trap doors if you need to escape
HINT: It's all in the mind 👇
I've escaped the life of a non-woke university professor to create a life built on entrepreneurial creativity
7+ years teaching and two battles over freedom I needed to get out.
But I first needed to understand how my mind was the real prison I needed freedom from.
The power of ‘unlearning’
When you train for a specific career you learn patterns of thinking that make you successful.
For me that meant showing knowledge as a substitute for understanding knowledge.
In the university you are praised for 'what you know' not 'how well can to teach others' or even 'is this knowledge valuable to know in the first place?'
So overtime you begin to filter all your thoughts through that lens
After years of this patterning you don't even realize how deep inside that type of thinking you find yourself.
And it's not just in the university, it's in EVERY business, career, or group.
I coach a guy who's a lawyer and his mind in trained to win every single conversation like a court case.
Imagine what that internal dialogue looks like for him? It's not about the truth, it's about finding the edge to eke out a vicotry
Great in the courtroon, disastrous for the individual!
Stuck in the same pattern
You see, the brain is a muscle and we know that our muscles have a memory of their own.
In sports we call that 'muscle memory' acting not thinking and praise athletes who have that level of instinct, to just play and react.
Same thing happens with your brain.
Your brain forms consistent pathways that then become automatic thought processes
And this becomes the BIGGEST PRISON IMAGINABLE
It sounds like this
"I'm too old to start something new" "
That thought makes me uncomfortable"
"I don't want to hear that argument again"
"I don't have to power to change at this point"
"What good would trying accomplish, it'll never work"
We too often blame external circumstances without realizing we are putting limits on ourselves through our patterned thought.
Many live inside this prison and never realize it.
How did I escape?
I used my body to force experience.
I studied sport history and philosophy but didn't exercise or play sport. So I began trail running to get out of my head and into the world of action.
The more I relied on action the less I began to care about thought. And once I made that disconnect I could see just how limited in my thinking I'd been.
I started thinking of exciting careers and opportunities outside academia.
I saw all the ways I could teach and share knowledge that didn't rely on tuition, grading, registration, and the traditional classroom.
I became excited at these new opportunities.
So that when I finally had the chance I made my escape.
Kind of like Andy Dufrense in The Shawshank Redemption, biding my time until I got the opportunity to strike
Your turn
Maybe you haven't realized you're living inside you're own prison until just now.
Now what do you do about it?
Start breaking down the patterned blocks of thought and watch brick by brick the prison dissolve.
Some initial tips and steps
Reflect on the ways your career conditions your thoughts (similar to my prof example or the example of my lawyer client)
Find ways to live the OPPOSITE experience so your body forces you outside of those predictable patters
Open yourself to new ways of thinking, new perspectives, new attitudes, and see which best fit the type of life you desire to lead
You got this but if you're looking for first steps or an accountable plan to make the transition I'm here to help
